This week's NEWS
EPA's CUP$$ runneth over... and sprinkles small water
systems. PPCPs pit politics vs. science. GAO
translates D.C. lead issues into national infrastructure needs.
Much ado about Bisphenol A... U.S. report and Canadian actions create rush to get distance from polycarbonate plastic containers, but bottled
water and chemistry advocates beg to differ. Earth Day sees a focus on bottled water bottles? You don't have to live in
Florida to "Ask Edgar!"

PPCPs
- AWWA
provides good overview of recent Senate committee hearings on PPCPs
in drinking water (AWWA WaterWeek, April 21)
Commentary: In a crystal-clear juxtaposition of the political versus the
scientific, you had California's Senator Boxer demanding that water systems
immediately run out and begin sampling and AWWA's representative
saying "scientists need both occurrence data and human
health-effect information. It is scientifically inadequate to
communicate solely on what we can measure at any level without a
frame of reference for what that means. ...If we regulate
contaminants based upon detection, rather than health effects, we
are embarking on a futile journey without end,” and
AWWA schedules a May 7 Webcast: Endocrine Disruptors, Pharmaceuticals and
Personal Care Products - Actions and Communication
- Chicago
initiates testing for pharmaceuticals (Chicago Tribune, April
17) and so did a Chicago
newspaper (Chicago Tribune, April 17),
and bug repellent DEET is found (Chicago
Sun-Times, April 21)

of drug traces in drinking water prompts new Canadian rules (National Post, April 21)

- GAO report: Drinking Water,
the District of Columbia and Communities Nationwide Face Serious
Challenges in Their Efforts to Safeguard Water Supplies (PDF file, 521 K)
Commentary: This report contains only the testimony of a key GAO official and,
while it follows up on prior GAO reports on D.C.'s lead issue, the
national focus is much broader re: drinking water infrastructure
needs: "WASA's difficulties in meeting myriad fiscal
demands are mirrored across the country: Water infrastructure
needs nationwide are estimated to range from $485 billion to
nearly $1.2 trillion over the next 20 years."
- Columbus,
OH, school officials will initiate lead testing in city schools (Columbus Dispatch, April 18)
- Lead sampling in Ontario, Canada, county homes shows 14 of 244
samples over 10 ppb (Sarnia Observer, April 18)
