Federal Updates
- The
Science Advisory Board reviews directions
and budget for USEPA's research program (PDF
file, 204 K)
Commentary: SAB
expresses serious concern with the funding
and direction of EPA's research program: "...the
resulting research funding decisions appear
to be incremental rather than strategic, causing
research programs to focus more on yesterday’s
issues and less on new and emerging environmental
problems." Specifically,
for drinking water (p. 13), emphasis is placed on
the intersection of drinking water research with
watershed, human health, and homeland security research
programs.

Water Treatment
Laboratory Issues
- Lab
analyst in Erie County, NY, says lab
supervisor changed E.
coli result (WIVB
News, March 14)
Commentary: It
is emphasized
that, at this stage in the story, this
is an
"allegation" by a whistleblower and an
investigation is
underway. It is of concern
when a drinking water
lab microbiologist is
so fearful about retaliation
that she will only be interviewed in silhouette.

Malcolm
Pirnie Membrane Filtration Services

The
promulgation of the Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water
Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) established the first federal
regulatory framework for membrane filtration, including
microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration
(NF), and reverse osmosis (RO) systems applied for rule
compliance. Many states are expected to adopt this framework
for membrane regulation as well.
Working in conjunction with the
USEPA, Malcolm Pirnie has been involved in the development
of the Membrane
Filtration Guidance Manual in support of the LT2ESWTR. As
a result, the company has in-depth expertise with respect to
the new regulatory framework and how it will be applied to both
new and existing facilities. Malcolm Pirnie can lend its unique
experience to provide assistance throughout the project development
process, including planning, piloting, equipment procurement,
design, construction, and start-up, to ensure system compliance.
