Updates
- A
look at who's in control of what in the new Congress (AWWA)
Commentary: Although
it did not draw huge headlines in the popular press, observers
of the drinking water regulatory and legislative scene over the
past 20 or so years took special note of the appointment of Erik
Olson, former NRDC Director of Advocacy, to a key staff
position with the U.S. Senate's Environment
and Public Works Committee. Olson co-authored
many of the hard-hitting reports issued by
NRDC at critical times during consideration of a regulation
("Arsenic and
Old Laws") or on other issues ("Bottled
Water: Pure Drink or Pure Hype?").
State Updates
- Washington's
December Water Tap newsletter (PDF

Commentary:
Of special interest is the report (p. 14) on
sentencing of personnel of a small water
system for falsifying water quality reporting.
Included were a 79-year-old commissioner, the
office manager, and the operator, who was given
some consideration for his service and for
blowing the whistle.
- Ohio
has amended its operator certification rules (PDF

- Texas
water
scam alert issued (Bryan-College
Station Eagle, December 15)
Commentary:
It is clear that Bryan, TX, takes its drinking water
seriously. But they don't take themselves too seriously...
at least, judging from their 2005 water quality report,
which features a
movie-inspired 12-month calendar. Bryan water/wastewater
employees are the stars of the monthly posters, including
"Flushdance," "A Leak of Their Own,"
"O Water, Where Art Thou," and "Forrest
Pump," which stars Hizzoner the Mayor himself.
This is one CCR that probably gets read. (By the way,
the city's nine wells are 2800 feet deep and pump
water out at 118 degrees F.)
