This week's NEWS

Major surface water treatment rule is ready to go. When DOD speaks (on perchlorate), everybody listens! Safe alternative sought as replacement! Interesting and opinionated miscellaneous items on cancer clusters, Erin B. and speaking environmentese! Which came first? The chicken (H2S) or the egg (copper pipe)? Or the holes in the egg? As the hawk said to the robin who had just eaten the worm: There's no free lunch! Nor free drinking water!! Fluoridation takes giant step in UK, but will the Commoners concur. Where will the bucks come from for small water system arsenic woes? Pb and Cu monitoring can get really expensive in New Jersey... or anywhere else a judge gets involved. New Interim EPA chief and deputy step in.

Correction
  • In the July 2 issue of the NEWS, coverage was given to Bolling AFB (On the Virginia side of D.C.) distributing the CCR's from their water supply agency, the D.C. WASA. The following comment was made: "Apparently the USAF doesn't have to deliver the CCRs to each consumer like all other utilities must do!" which suggested that Bolling was not complying with SDWA requirements. THIS IS AN ERROR! Since Bolling receives all of its water from a regulated PWS and does not treat the water, it is NOT a PWS and is not required to distribute the CCR at all... so their good citizenship went unrewarded. Sorry, Bolling! (Incidentally, we forgot to point out that the front cover of D.C. WASA's CCR is our leading candidate to win the coveted CCaRzy... the equivalent of an Oscar... for water public information!)

Arsenic
  • Arsenic in groundwater hits smaller California Central Valley communities hard: Commentary: Even special legislative grants do not bail out hardest-hit towns... and, the main source of relief advocated by USEPA in its fiscal impact reviews, the DWSRF... doesn't have enough money because high arsenic doesn't rank high enough to get into currently fundable range!  (Note: California has ruled that systems with arsenic problems may be eligible for SRF funding even before the Fed rule is effective or California adopts its own MCL.)
  • Arsenic rule impacts on Arizona cities vary widely (Glendale Star, July 10)
